Publishing and Unpublishing

It’s been a while since my last update. Writing has been slow and difficult, but with some recent submissions made, hopefully I’ll have some publication news for you soon.

My first bit of news is that I’ve temporarily withdrawn Scar On The Sky from publication. This novella is particularly close to my heart, but it’s clear the book needs reworking. Gerwyn will undergo a name change, and the story will be developed further and lengthened. There are two more novellas planned in the series, so I intend to re-release when the next book is close to being ready. At this stage the Rockington series will be ready to grace your shelves sometime in 2019.

As some of you may have heard, Amazon is merging CreateSpace into KDP. Until now, I have been producing my paperbacks through CreateSpace, but this decision will mean any future titles I publish will have paperbacks printed by another company. The problem is that KDP will not provide Australian authors with proof copies, nor with author copies. Amazon (the parent company) is refusing to sell anything to Australians unless it’s through their Australian retail site. This means to obtain a copy of my own book, I would have to make it readily available for sale and then buy it through a retail channel. Not only is this significantly more expensive, but it also means the book would be available for purchase before I got to check the appearance and quality. On screen proofing is not perfect. At the very least, cover images can appear quite different when printed compared to how they look on a screen. The existing paperbacks will remain printed through an Amazon company for now, but other factors might see me move them elsewhere in the future.

I had hoped to bring you a 2018 new release by now. Rest assured I do have a number of projects in development, including plans for a short story collection. If you’ve read and enjoyed any of my titles, please leave a review somewhere. It will help motivate me to keep writing. Even a single sentence is enough!

Twisted Tax Tales

Featuring 35 short stories from an international mix of authors, Twisted Tax Tales is an anthology resulting from a competition run in 2016 by Success Tax Professionals. All profits from the book will be donated to the Save The Tasmanian Devil Appeal. My story, Life, Death and Taxes, was judged to be in the top 25 entries, and is included in the publication. I’m delighted to be a part of the project.

Tasmanian devils are one of my favourite animals, partly because I am Tasmanian myself. The species is under threat from Devil Facial Tumour Disease, a contagious cancer. DFTD has had a devastating effect on the wild population. Funds raised will go towards research into combating this major threat. It will be a tragedy if we lose these wonderful little animals. Please consider buying a copy of the anthology, or making a direct donation, and spread the word.

New year, new stories

I hope everyone has had a safe and happy start to 2017. My goal is to do lots more writing this year, and release multiple titles.
I’m off to a good start. Today I finished the first draft of my first paranormal romance novella. It will need work, of course, but it’s been in development for a long time. I’ve based it (extremely loosely) on the lyrics to the song Scar On The Sky, with which it will share the title. If a fallen angel romance appeals to you, keep an eye out for further news on the project.
I have about ten other projects on the go as well. A few are side projects but if I get them all done this year it will be a real achievement. I also have a feeling I will be starting at least a few more new books in the coming months.
What would you like to see more of from me this year? More romance? More horror? Something else? Suggestions are always welcome.

Here you go, everyone. I have released a brand new horror short story, Tasmanian Devils, set in the wilderness of my home state. Currently available on Amazon, and shortly through other retailers too. The base idea for this had been rattling around in my head for a while. I hope you enjoy it!

Success

I am delighted to announce that my short story Life, Death and Taxes has been selected in the top 20 entries of an international competition. An anthology is being produced, with the profits going towards research into saving the Tasmanian Devil. My story will be in there, and I’m proud to be involved in the project. I will post publication details when I know more.
